Gender Based Violence
The fact that one out of every three
women around the world has been beaten, coerced into
sex, or otherwise abused in her lifetime is a reality
that must be addressed. Gender-based violence (GBV) is
brutality against an individual as a result of
gender-based power inequalities. The overwhelming
majority of these abuses target women and girls. These
cruelties are human rights violations that devastate not
only individuals but entire communities. Women and girls
are victimized worldwide, across socio-economic classes,
and within cultures. Abuses may be committed within the
privacy of a home, as strategies in warfare, or in the
hidden transactions of economic commerce.
Proof will launch a photography exhibition focused on
three major themes found in gender-based violence:
1) Sexual Slavery
2) Domestic Abuse
3) Rape as a Weapon of War.
Photography from around the globe will illustrate that
GBV is not an isolated issue but heinously rampant. By
spotlighting people who have endured violence and
survived, the project aims to share their stories and
emphasize the message that gender based violence is
intolerable.
The mission of this project is to provide a space for
reflection and facilitate an interactive dialogue on GBV.
